Manuella Oliveira Yassa, PhD

Dr. Manuella Oliveira Yassa leads the Brain Explorer Academy and serves as Director of Outreach and Education at the University of California, Irvine's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. In this role, she works with students and trainees of all stages including K-12 students in the Orange County community, undergraduate students from around the country and UCI doctoral students. Her goal in the Brain Explorer Academy is to inspire youth to explore the wonders of the brain and equip them with the tools to actively engage in neuroscience.

Prior to joining UCI, Manuella taught middle school science in Baltimore City where she fell in love with neuroscience education. Manuella earned her Bachelor's Degree in neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University, and her Master's and Doctoral degrees in Social Ecology with a focus on neuroscience education from UC Irvine. Manuella's neuroscience education programs are supported by the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the UC Office of the President, and the Dana Foundation.

In addition to her roles at UCI, she serves on the Education Advisory Committee for the Irvine Unified School District and is co-director of the USA Brain Bee.
